Connect marketing and sales around lead quality

A shared qualification model gives campaigns better direction and commercial teams a more relevant route to follow-up.

Published 26 Mar 2026

Marketing and sales often use the same word—lead—to describe very different levels of relevance and intent. A shared definition is one of the simplest ways to improve both campaign decisions and follow-up.

Define fit before volume

Describe the organisations, roles and needs that make a conversation commercially relevant. Include exclusions as well as positive signals. Clear boundaries reduce wasted outreach and give campaign teams a better basis for content and targeting.

Agree what happens next

Qualification is incomplete without routing. Specify who owns each lead type, which context needs to be transferred and how quickly a response is expected. A promising enquiry can still fail if the next action is unclear.

Build a feedback loop

Sales feedback should be structured enough to improve future campaigns. Was the organisation a poor fit? Was timing wrong? Did messaging create the wrong expectation? Consistent reasons produce better insight than a generic accepted or rejected status.

The goal is not a perfect scoring model. It is a working agreement that helps both teams recognise relevance, act consistently and learn from real conversations.
